Laser Vision Correction

LASIK (Laser-Assisted-In-Situ-Keratomileusis) is an FDA-Approved outpatient procedure that uses the eximer laser to reshape the cornea to correct your vision.  LASIK typacially takes about 10 minutes to perform on each eye and is one of the most frequently performed healthcare procedures in North America.

Is LASIK right for you?  The best way to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK is to set up an appointment with Dr. Ross for a personal one-on-one consultation to discuss your needs and options.

LASIK can treat people who:

  • Are at least 18 years old

  • Are not pregnant or nursing

  • Are in good general health

  • Have a stable prescription

  • Have no eye diseases

Glaucoma

There are several different types of glaucoma but all types are caused by increased pressure within the eye that can destroy the optic nerve if not treated promptly.  During a comprehensive eye examination an instrument called a tonometer is used to check the level of pressure in the eye.  In addition, vision fields are performed to determine the presence of blind spots or shrinkage in the peripheral field of vision.  The best way to protect yourself from glaucoma is through early detection and treatment.

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye.  Normally the lens is clear and allows the light to enter the eye.  But when a cataract forms, the eye is less able to see clearly.  Cataracts are a common vision problem that is highly treatable.  Changes within the protein material of the lens are responsible for cataracts.  These changes are a natural part of aging but some people are born with cataracts.  Cataracts can also be due to:

  • Long term exposure to sunlight

  • Diabetes

  • Smoking

  • Injury to the eye

  • Long-term use of steroid medications

Early stages of cataracts cause little or no visual problem.  The rate of progression varies with each eye.  Left untreated, cataracts can result in loss of vision.  As cataracts develop, symptoms may include:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision

  • Trouble seeing at night

  • Seeing glare of halos around lights

  • Distortion of colors

Age-Related Macular Degeneration or (AMD)

Age-related Macular degeneration is a common eye disease that causes loss of vision.  It usually affects persons over 50.  With AMD the macula (the part of the eye that controls central vision) breaks down.

The exact causes of AMD are not  known.  Certain factors may increase the likelihood that a person will develop AMD.  These include smoking, farsightedness, high blood pressure, obesity, and family history of AMD.

One or both eyes can be affected.  Loss of sharp central vision is often first noticed.  Other problems include blurry images, faded color vision, dark spots in the center of images, and distorted lines and edges.

Dr. Ross will examine your eyes to determine whether you have AMD.  You'll undergo tests of your vision and if Dr. Ross thinks you have AMD, photographs of your retina may be taken.

Dry Eyes

Research studies have shown that dry eye is caused by 2 underlying issues; a decrease in tear production due to inflammation, or an increase in tear film evaporation from oil loss.  The other cause of dry eye can be the loss of oils in the tear film itself, causing the tears to evaporate too quickly creating reflex tearing from the chronic irritation.

Common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Blurring of vision

  • Stinging or burning

  • Light sensitivity

  • A gritty sensation

  • Pain

  • Itching

  • Redness

  • Watery eyes

Some possible causes of dry eye may be:

  • Age

  • Menopause

  • Post-LASIK

  • Sjögren's Syndrome

  • Contact lens wear

  • Computer use

  • Hot, dry climates

  • Air conditioning

Allergies and Eye Infections

Spring and fall are, for many of us, the most pleasant seasons of the year.  However, for those suffering from allergies, spring and fall can be a time of recurring misery.  Hay fever, as it is commonly called, can actually be triggered by many substances.  Most often, it's the grass, tree, and weed pollens so abundant in spring and late summer.  Sneezing, congestion, and red, water, itchy, swollen eyes are the annoying symptoms that accompany seasonal allergies.

Allergies can't be cured and often can't be avoided, but that doesn't mean you should continue to suffer when spring and fall roll around.  Ask Dr Ross or his staff about allergy relief for your eyes.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that covers the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eye.  Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or chemicals, but allergic conjunctivitis is always triggered by exposure to a specific allergen or allergens.  Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis always occurs at about the same time each yea when the allergen is most abundant.  Aside from completely avoiding contact with any allergens, there is no way to entirely escape your allergies.  However, it is possible to gain a measure of relief from your symptoms, and to minimize discomfort.

Any suspected eye infections should be seen immediately.  There is no need to suffer with a red or painful eye.  Call us at 580 353-5090 to be seen right away..
